Pierce My Ear
The idea of being a slave is often used to describe the relationship between God and His people. Paul speaks about being "slaves to righteousness," and while the idea of slavery often has a negative connotation, it accurately describes who we are compared to God. The scriptures tell us that God purchased us with the blood of His son (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and as such we belong to God. We are His to do with as He pleases.
Sin deserves death (Romans 6:23), and we are all sinners (Romans 3:23). Instead of dealing out death to us, God gave us the freedom to make a choice to serve him. One of my favorite songs is called Pierce My Ear, and it speaks about the choice we ca make. The lyrics are as follows:

Pierce my ear, O Lord, my God.
Take me to Your door this day.
I will serve no other god.
Lord, I'm here to stay.
For You have paid the price for me.
With Your blood You ransomed me.
I will serve You eternally.
A free man I'll never be.
So pierce my ear, O Lord, my God.
Take me to Your door this day.
I will serve no other god.
Lord, I'm here to stay.
Lord, I'm here to stay.
The song speaks beautifully about the relationship between a Christian and God. It has its roots in an Old Testament law handed down in Exodus 21:
“Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever." -Exodus 21:1-6
We have the power to choose who we will serve. We can choose to serve ourselves and sin and receive death as we are due, or we can humble ourselves, submit to Christ and proclaim, "I love my God and I will not go from Him; pierce my ear, God, and I will serve you eternally," and live with Him forever.
He ransomed me. He ransomed you. He paid the price for our sins and died in our place. When we understand that, how can we make any other choice but to follow Him? We do not belong to ourselves, as it is written,

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”
-Galatians 2:20
I want to be His and only His. Even if it means being a slave to Him, I must belong to God. It is He who shapes me and makes me who I am that I will pledge my allegiance to every day. Let us count the cost and serve Him for eternity.
I pray that you serve God. I pray that you can see Him working in your life. But if you can't say yes to both of these things I pray that you come to know Him quickly. Life is hard to live, and sometimes it can drag us through the mud, but Christ walks beside us ready to comfort and strengthen and heal if we ask. If your faith has been shaken, don't give up on God, reach out to someone to talk about the difficulties you are facing. Pray to God for understanding and open His word to search for answers.
He stands ready, will you serve Him this day?
